Summer Skin Game Plan: What to Do (and What to Avoid)

Summer is where a lot of good skin habits either pay off or completely fall apart. Between sun exposure, heat, sweat, and travel, your skin is under constant stress. And if you’re not adjusting your routine, you can easily undo months of progress.

Here’s how to protect your results and keep your skin in a good place all summer long.

What to Do ☀️

1. Wear (and Reapply) SPF Every Day

This is non-negotiable. UV exposure is the fastest way to trigger pigment, break down collagen, and reverse any progress you’ve made.

If you’re prone to pigmentation or melasma, tinted SPF is even better. It contains iron oxides that protect against visible light, which regular sunscreen doesn’t fully block.

2. Keep Your Skin Cool

Heat alone can stimulate pigment production and increase inflammation (even without direct sun).

Be mindful of:

  • Long periods in direct heat

  • Hot yoga or overly heated workouts

  • Saunas and steam rooms

Simple habits like seeking shade, using a hat, or cooling the skin post-sun exposure can make a big difference.

3. Stay Consistent With At-Home Care

Summer is not the time to abandon your routine.

Double cleansing is key this time of year. Between SPF, sweat, and makeup, your skin needs a thorough (but gentle) cleanse at the end of the day. Starting with a cleanser that breaks down buildup, followed by a second cleanse to actually clean the skin, helps prevent congestion and breakouts.

Your core routine should include:

  • Vitamin C in the morning to protect against environmental damage and support brighter, more even skin

  • Retinol at night to keep cell turnover moving and maintain results

  • Chemical exfoliants to keep pores clear and pigment in check (especially those with kojic acid if you’re prone to discoloration)

  • And of course light-weight hydration to keep your skin barrier happy

You can also incorporate enzyme-based exfoliation overnight for a gentle boost in cell turnover without the irritation that stronger treatments can cause in the summer.

4. Choose Treatments Strategically

You don’t have to stop treatments in the summer, you just have to be smart about them.

Safe, effective options include:

  • MOXI for gentle resurfacing and pigment maintenance

  • microneedling to support skin health and improve texture

  • Light chemical peels to keep skin clear and bright

  • Facials play an important role in keeping skin clear, managing congestion, and making sure your at-home routine is actually working for you

The Bottom Line

Summer skin is all about balance. Protect what you’ve built, maintain your results, and avoid unnecessary setbacks.

You don’t need to stop treatments or obsess over your skin, you just need to be intentional. Small, consistent choices now will save you from having to do major correction later.
